Free Composting Classes Offered Across the County
It is estimated that composting can decrease your contribution to landfills by 25%-30%. From Malibu to San Dimas, LA’s Dept. of Water and Power has free weekend composting workshops countywide to help residents set up a simple household system. This is also where you can purchase a compost bin at a huge discount for $40 (a similar model at a gardening center goes for well over twice that price). City of Glendale workshops offer residents a free compost bin and pitchfork after attending the class.
Friendly, knowledgeable instructors give easy instructions on how to compost, tips on what is best to put in your bin and explanations on how Mother Nature breaks all this stuff down for us. Did you know you can put shredded paperwork in a compost bin? Or hydrate it with water from cooked pasta? That’s what LAist learned during a recent class.
No reservations are needed and workshops take about an hour and a half. Some venues even offer free coffee and raffles for gardening items like soil testers and water meters.
