Rafael Furcal Facing Setbacks

“It’s not good,” Dodger shortstop Rafael Furcal said about the setback on his back. “I’m working and working, and I never get better.”Furcal has been sidelined since August 3 with a lower back strain. An MRI ruled out the possibility of disk damage and Furcal will be undergoing a bone scan tomorrow according to head athletic trainer Stan Conte.
“This is not the same kind of issue as before when he had pain down his legs,” Conte said. “Obviously this is a little bit of a setback at this point. We’ll take a half step back, look at it again and see what we have in the next 24 hours.”
Furcal travelled with the team to Philadelphia and Atlanta last week doing his regular rehab work. Everything was going fine until he got back to Los Angeles with the team early Tuesday morning when his back tightened up on him and got worse today. The plans to send Furcal on a rehab assignment with Class-A Inland Empire 66ers have been put on hold indefinitely.
“He was getting excited a few days ago about going out on rehab,” manager Joe Torre said. “It’s disappointing for him”
Furcal was obviously frustrated with the setback when talking to reporters in the clubhouse before the game.
“I felt so good over there, and then when I came back yesterday and today I felt really bad,” Furcal said. “I don’t know what I have to do now. I’m doing everything I can.”
