Santa Monica Unveils 2 New Pieces of Public Art
As the grand opening of Santa Monica Place nears, the city today officially unveiled two new pieces of public art. Both attached to parking garages, each offer different experiences.
On Parking Structure 7 sits a large installation made up of 335 mirror-polished stainless steel spheres hovering above the ground. Together they conjure up the piece's title, Cradle. The work by Ball Nogues Studio is suggestive of foam or sea life, something that relates well to Santa Monica's beachside location.
Over on Parking Structure 8, an abstract mural by Anne Marie Karlsen loosely resembles the old Pacific Wheel on the Santa Monica Pier that was recently replaced. In fact, photographic images of the Pacific Wheel in motion were used to make the mural.
