Beginning Tonight, Half of Sunset Blvd. Bridge over 405 Fwy to be Demolished
Starting tonight and lasting five more consecutive nights, crews will demolish one half of the Sunset Boulevard bridge over the 405 Freeway. The bridges are being retrofitted as part of the $1 billion northbound carpool lane project.
"Demolition work and associated closures will be conducted during night-time hours only, with the bridge, freeway and local streets reopened during day-time hours," explains Metro on their blog, which has full details on closures over the next six days. "Demolition activities are expected between the hours of 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., with bridge demolition occurring between 12 a.m. and 4 a.m. Ramp closures may start as early as 7 p.m."
The southern half of the bridge will be demolished and will take about 10 months to reconstruct. During that time, lanes on the northern half will still be open. When reconstruction is completed, the northern half will be demolished followed by another 10 months of reconstruction.
Sunset Boulevard will be closed in both directions each night of the demolition. Each direction of the 405 freeway will be alternately closed for two nights each.
