Mountain Lions Found Shot in Orange and San Diego Counties

State investigators are looking into separate deaths of mountain lions in Southern California, according to the OC Register. A mountain lion being tracked via GPS collar by scientists was shot and killed in Trabuco Canyon on July 3rd. Department of Fish and Game are not releasing any details until the investigation has been completed, but the paper calls the deaths questionable.

Another lion was found dead, likely from a gunshot wound as well in northern San Diego County. The mother of two recently gave birth to two cubs. Scientists are concerned because they cannot survive on their own at this age.

This comes as four "credible sightings" of mountain lions in Orange County parks have been reported. Since 2001, scientists have studied and tracked 51 of the cougars.

In the Orange County city of Yorba Linda, city officials have permitted coyotes to be trapped and shot as part of a plan to rid the area of the animals. Tomorrow, the city council will discuss a comprehensive coyote management plan.
