LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Right Their Ship
LA Dodgers defeats San Francisco Giants 4-2. The Dodgers really like the NL West. Rafael Furcal continued his hot streak hitting a one-out double that sparked the Dodgers offense and came home for the tying run on Andre Ethier’s sacrifice fly. Manny Ramirez’s double brought home Reed Johnson, starting again in centerfield for the slumping Matt Kemp, for the go-ahead run and the 2-1 Dodger lead. Dodger starter Chad Billingsley started out inauspiciously when he walked lead-off hitter Andres Torres in an eight-pitch at-bat in the first inning. After Torres stole second when Freddy Sanchez swung and missed on a 3-2 pitch, he came home on an Aubrey Huff single for the quick 1-0 lead. The Giants tied the game in the sixth inning when Sanchez hit a single bringing in Travis Ishikawa. But Casey Blake in the top of the eight with Ronnie Belliard on first base hit a homer off of reliever Santiago Casilla to left centerfield to give the Dodgers the 4-2 lead. Jeff Weaver (5-1) got the win while Casilla (1-2) was tagged with the loss. Hong-Chih Kuo despite giving up a walk and single notched his second save of the season on 22 pitches. The Dodgers turned five double plays against the Giants tying an LA record.
South Carolina defeats UCLA 7-1. The Bruins had no solutions for Gamecocks’ right-handed starter Blake Cooper who was pitching on three days rest as he struck out ten Bruins with that filthy breaking ball. In fact catcher Steve Rodriguez batting ninth in the Bruin lineup knocked a single in the fifth inning for the Bruins’ only hit until the ninth inning. Meanwhile the Gamecocks when crazy on Bruins’ starter Gerrit Cole getting six runs on him in his seven innings of work that were aided by two Bruins errors. They added a run in the eighth inning off of reliever Matt Grace. The Bruins finally got to Cooper in the ninth inning getting the bases loaded with no outs. John Taylor came on to relieve Cooper and got a double play ball which scored the only Bruin run and a fly ball to right field. UCLA must win on Tuesday to stay alive in the best-of-three series.
NOTABLE NOTES
STANLEY CUP PRIDE. Over the weekend the (now former) Chicago Blackhawks defenseman took the Stanley Cup on another parade through Chicago. This time it was at the Chicago Gay Pride parade in Boystown to honor Toronto Maple Leafs and former Anaheim Ducks general manager Brian Burke’s son Brendan. Brendan was killed in a car accident in February just months after coming out to his fellow Miami University (Ohio) teammates. And no, Sopel is happily married with four kids. “I wasn’t here to advocate (anything), but if coming here helps break down walls in the meantime, so be it. I was here for Brendan,” Sopel told Outsports.Also riding in the parade was Mr. Cub himself Ernie Banks along with the Ricketts family, the owners of the Cubs. Laura Ricketts, younger sister of Cubs’ chairman Thomas Ricketts and part shareholder of the Cubs, is on the board of Lambda Legal and the first openly gay owner of a major sports franchise.
- DRAMA AT WIMBLEDON. The final US man has fallen at the All England Club. 2009 Wimbledon finalist Andy Roddick was ousted in his fourth round match against 82nd-ranked Taiwanese player Yen-Hsun Lu 4-6, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4), 6-7 (5), 9-7 that lasted more than 4 ½ hours. Roddick could only convert on one of eight break chances. Meanwhile Rafael Nadal despite the drama of his last two matches came out in straight sets against Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu, and Roger Federer won in straight sets against Jurgen Melzer. The other American man left standing in the tournament Sam Querrey bowed out in straight sets against fourth-seeded Andy Murray on his way to become the first British player to win since 1936.
