The cause of death for a newborn found inside a Redondo Beach trash can in early March has been deemed asphyxia and classified as a homicide, the Los Angeles County coroner's office has announced, via the LA Times.
24-year-old Jessie Lauren Canfield was at a house party the night before before disappearing into a bedroom when she felt some discomfort. That's where she apparently gave birth to a baby -- and she said she had no idea she was pregnant -- before allegedly stuffing it into a trash can on a street off the Pacific Coast Highway.
The District Attorney's office was hesitant to file charges at first. "[The] coroner's office has not yet determined cause of death and has not yet ruled the death a homicide." said Deputy District Attorney Christi Frey a few days after the incident, but with the recent news attorneys may finally take action.
