Community and student groups have voiced criticism against the school, claiming CSULB did not release information about the case quickly enough. In response, President F. King Alexander said "the university reacted to the attack immediately and has been working very closely with the victim. He said they weren’t able to send out an e-mail to students until they had all the information and a police sketch of the attacker," adding that he did not wish to create panic among the student population, according to the Daily 49er.
CSULB also says the incident was isolated, and released a statement from Carpenter wherein the student credits the school for their role in the investigation:
I’m aware the university has come under some criticisms regarding communications and response, in general. But again, I feel that the administration's response has been focused on the investigation and my wellbeing.Carpenter's attacker fled following the violent confrontation, and has not been arrested.
