Police estimates put Saturday's May Day protest in downtown at only 100,000 people (in 2006, a downtown May Day rally brought around 500,000 out, one that went down Wilshire was estimated at even more), but officials are warning of major delays as the march and rally goes up Broadway. Participants will be arriving as early as 6 a.m. with road closures beginning at 5:45 a.m. around the staging area between 11th and Olympic along Broadway.
More closures will come around 10 a.m., one hour before the march is expected to begin and head northward to between 1st and Temple where street closures will remain closed until 6 p.m. (for extremely detailed info, LADOT has it)
The moral of story? Whether your participating or passing through, prepare for traffic. Your best bet? Use the subways or lights rails into downtown. Buses, however, will have some delays. 47 downtown Metro buses will be detoured for the majority of the day. DASH buses will also be rerouted, which are detailed via their Twitter feed.
As for Westwood, the 2 and 761 will be detoured during evening hours. The anticipated smaller rally will take place between Westwood Boulevard and Gayley Avenue. Another smaller one is also planned for MacArthur Park.
