Get Out: Burbank Arts Festival, Echo Park Party, Pop Lock and Shop It, MENSA Fest, Known Gallery Opening
Arts Festivals
So our little weather app tells us, today will be sunny and pleasantly warm - the perfect type of day for arts festival-ing. There are two hitting the streets today, each of which not only provides the typical painting, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, street art, food, beer, etc. that you'd expect to find, but an unexpected twist as well. The 7th Annual Burbank Arts Festival piques our interest with talk of a Musical Petting Zoo, (what could this be??) and the UGTL party in Echo Park particularly intrigues us with their Street Fighter 4 tournament. There's something for everyone today (although be aware, the latter event is 18+).
Pop Lock and SHOP IT
Most of us don't really live in the glitzy, glammy, uberchic L.A. outsiders imagine, but every now and again a particularly "Hollywood" event actually sounds kind of fun. Such is the case with today's Pop Lock and SHOP IT event, taking place at the London Hotel. $5 gets you in and buys you access to complimentary poolside cocktails to sip as you peruse duds by more than 30 high-end designers, marked down specially for this event. A percentage of the proceeds benefits the Abolish Slavery Coalition, which fights human trafficking.
The Wonder Cabinet
Today Occidental College hosts an event some are calling "a Ringling Bros. circus composed of MENSA members." For almost nine hours in Thorne Hall, various speakers, artists, performers and scientists will guide participants in examining such topics as the secret life of snowflakes, the literal "music" of the cosmos, paper-folds bridge art and the mystical origins of the Russian Space Program. This program is free and open to the public! View the full schedule here.
Phil Frost Art Show
Tonight Known Gallery will host a reception for the opening of their latest exhibit, Phil Frost's "Pale Writer." This is another major show for the contemporary/street art-based space, which recently housed pieces by graffiti greats Haze and Stussy. Tonight's party begins at 8, with the exhibit running until May 15th.
