Tea Party Pageantry Expresses Dismay With Obama, Taxation Today in Irvine
While protests today in Pasadena and Burbank had lackluster turnout and definitely no one dressed like George Washington, in Orange County several Tax Day Tea Party Patriots rallies drew crowds of hundreds. In Irvine, an estimated 400 attendees "gathered for speeches given from a stage lined with portraits of early Americans," according to the OC Register. Among the speakers were GOP Assemblyman Chuck DeVore who is aiming to take Democrat Barbara Boxer's Senate seat in the upcoming election.
The Register adds:
Speeches - including some campaigns stumping - were interspersed with satirical songs and performances. There were people in 1700s attire and some carrying cardboard pitchforks. For an event where people expressed so much dislike for government policies, the overall tone of the rally was markedly festive. Mention of Jimmy Carter garnered boos. Glenn Beck got some cheers. Ronald Reagan attracted big cheers.
