2 Runways at LAX Deemed Unsafe by FAA, New Report Says They're Fine

A report assembled two years ago by the FAA claims that two runways at LAX are unsafe, as evidenced by the high frequency of "close calls between planes on the ground," according to the Daily News. In fact, we had more of those close calls than at any other US airport.

While the FAA continues to stand by their report, a new unrelated report released in February asserts "there's no need to spend millions altering" the potentially dangerous north runways in question.

Mayor Villaraigosa agrees with the more recent report, and in response to a letter from FAA head Randy Babbitt claiming the "new study is flawed," he said yesterday "he opposes reconfiguring the north airfield unless it's clearly demonstrated that safety demands it."
