Haiti Fundraisers Continue: Haircuts, Big Name Bands on New CD, Rise from the Rubble
Haiti isn't making headlines as much as they were earlier this month, but widespread problems continue. Basics like food and electricity continue to be a problem, despite an outpouring of donations from around the world. Up to $15 billion may be needed and the fundraisers continue. Here are a few that caught our eye...
Cut-a-thon at Sola Salon Studios
Sola Salon Studios in Sherman Oaks is a building where high-end hair stylists rent individual studios. A group of them have gotten together to do a Cut-a-thon this Sunday and will give all the proceeds to the International Relief Committee. On their Facebook page, they bring up a good point: "The people in Haiti will need a lot of assisstance before Hurricane season." Haircuts here generally range from $40 to over $100 so they hope you'll be generous in what you'll be giving. The minimum suggested donation is $25.
18 Songs from Great Bands
American Eagle Outfitters with FILTER Magazine have made a CD compilation called Hear to Help, which will be available at all of the clothing store's locations in the U.S. and Canada. The album includes Beck, Keane, Snow Patrol, Julian Casablancas, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Vampire Weekend, Minus the Bear, Busdriver, Of Montreal, Grizzly Bear and more. 100% of the $10 retail price will go directly to Oxfam America. CDs will be available through March 18th.
Rise from the Rubble
This Haiti benefit will include George Laguerre from TiGeorge’s Chicken in Echo Park and a number of celebrities such as Justin Hires (Stomp the Yard), recording artist Minister Cleotis Gray and I Am inspirational vocalists, southern jazz recording artist Ombrey, inspirational hip hop lyricist and recording artist Kaos, and socially conscious rapper and recording artist Sens Musiq. It takes place on Saturday, March 6th at the 1st Presbyterian Church of Inglewood. Suggested donation is $10, which goes to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance.
