Classical Pick: Bell at Disney Hall, Brush Up Your Shakespeare, Schumann's 200th
This upcoming week is a chance for classical music buffs to celebrate, and to see things in a fresh context.
First up is Joshua Bell (violin) and Jeremy Denk (piano) in recital at Disney Hall. They'll be performing Bach: Violin Sonata No.4 in C minor, BWV 1017; Grieg: Sonata No. 3 for Violin and Piano in C minor, Op. 45; Schumann: Sonata No. 1 for Violin and Piano in A minor, Op. 105; and Ravel: Sonata for Violin and Piano. It's a great opportunity to see Bell perform in a far more intimate setting than the usual Hollywood Bowl or larger venue.

On Saturday it's time to Brush Up Your Shakespeare thanks to the Opera Buffs. "The dramatic works of William Shakespeare have not only made a lasting impression on countless generations of theatergoers but have induced an impressive array of composers, from Guiseppe Verdi to Cole Porter, to mount the bard’s works in a musical setting. Audiences will have an opportunity to see fully staged excerpts from many of these operas and musicals" in a show that will feature the talents of sopranos Jacquelynne Fontaine and Alexandra Loutsion, countertenor Nick Zammit, tenor YuJoong Kim and baritone Julian Arsenault.

On Sunday you can celebrate Schumann's 200th birthday with a free concert featuring Connie Kim-Sheng, piano; Yuhao Chen, piano; and Alexander Treger, conductor. On the program: Schumann, Manfred Overture ; Mozart, Concerto for Two Pianos No. 10; Schumann, Symphony No. 2.
