LAst Night's Action: Kings Win Battle of SoCal
LA Kings defeat Anaheim Ducks 6-4. After the Kings took a strangle hold of the game leading 4-1 early in the third period, the Ducks proved they still have some fight in them. The Ducks scored three goals in less than 6 ½ minutes to tie the game before the halfway point of the third. But the Kings would regain their composure retaking control of the puck. Dustin Brown hit a wrist shot to give the Kings a 5-4 lead, and Anze Kopitar cemented the win with a power play goal in the waning seconds of the game. Kopitar was everywhere in the game scoring four points with two goals. The Kings have now won eight games in a row tying a franchise record. They last achieved this feat from 2/23/92 to 3/9/92 and previously from 10/21/72 to 11/7/72. The Kings will look to break the record against the Detroit Red Wings at Staples Center Saturday afternoon. The Kings also elevate to fourth place in the Western Conference with 73 points. And to top it off, the Kings have won all three meetings against the Ducks this season with one more left in Anaheim on Monday.
UCLA Bruins defeat Stanford Cardinal 77-73. Just to show you how awful the Pac-10 is, UCLA is now in a four-way tie for first place.
USC Trojans defeat California Golden Bears 66-63.
Notable Notes
- The Clippers general manager Mike Dunleavy announced today he has fired himself as head coach. This isn’t a huge surprise since the Clippers went 2-6 on their road trip including awful losses to the New Jersey Nets and Minnesota Timberwolves. Kim Hughes will be the interim coach for the remainder of the year. Hughes has been an assistant coach for the Clippers for the last seven seasons and has been a coach and scout with Denver and Milwaukee. At 215-325, Dunleavy was the Clippers all time wins leader as a head coach and was one game shy of the Western Conference Finals in 2006.
- Santa Anita will be host to the Robert B. Lewis Stakes on Saturday. Racing is Pioneer of the Nile, a colt who will be looking towards the Kentucky Derby. Pioneer of the Nile has turned some heads with his workouts and a victory in the CashCall Futurity (Grade I) on December 20 at Hollywood Park. What better way to spend a Saturday before the Super Bowl and perhaps see a Kentucky Derby thoroughbred? The Robert B. Lewis Stakes posts at 4:07 pm.
