Genser was a lifelong Santa Monica resident, who described himself on his 2008 campaign website as "an advocate, working to improve Santa Monica" for all residents, who was passionate about "fighting traffic-generating development and preserving the comfortable character" of his beloved "seaside town." He had served on City Council since 1988, and was elected Mayor three times (1992, 2000, 2008).
Said Santa Monica Mayor Pro Tempore Pam O’Connor and City Council of Genser's passing:
It is with deep sadness that we mourn the loss of our Mayor Ken Genser, an indefatigable champion for quality of life in Santa Monica. Ken distinguished himself with a fierce intellect, passion for progressive social policy and compassion for people. He served the Santa Monica community throughout his lifetime and will be greatly missed.
