We're no snowy Chicago or any other place with a traditional winter. But that doesn't mean we can't have our polar bear swims on New Year's Day! Here's what's happening:

8 a.m., Hanson Dam in Lake View Terrace: Anyone age eight or older can enter this 1.5-acre swim lake for some cold fun. The free event, now in its 10th year, is run by the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks.

11 a.m., breakwater at the end of Windward Avenue in Venice: Okay, this is not called a Polar Bear swim, but rather of a different animal. The Venice Penguin Club Swimmers will host their 50th annual New Year's Day swim. It's free and there's some interesting history found on the event's Facebook page. (via Yo! Venice!)

12 p.m., Cabrillo Beach Bathhouse in San Pedro: Here's another free event, compliments of the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks with the Cabrillo Beach Polar Bears. Now in its 58th year, join the fun in the Pacific Ocean and see the club's 2010 King and Queen be crowned.
