Engineers Who Hacked Traffic System, Caused Traffic Sentenced to Probation

Two L.A. engineers who in 2006 hacked the city's system to cause traffic delays over a labor dispute were sentenced to two years probation, reports the Los Angeles Times. Despite efforts by the city to block engineers from hacking the system during labor talks three years ago, Gabriel Murillo and Kartik Patel got in and prolonged red lights at key intersections around LAX, downtown and two other areas causing major gridlock (see above map).

The two have pleaded guilty and, in addition to probation, will pay $6,250 in restitution and complete 240 hours of community service.
