Box Office Review: American Teens Are Morons

In a stunning debut, New Moon blew away expectations by raking in a huge $140.7M to easily win the weekend. Do teenage girls ever flock to good movies? (Incidentally -- for those unfamiliar with the books -- the next films will feature Bella nearly being fucked to death and Jacob falling in love with a baby. Seriously.) Sports pic The Blind Side also topped early estimates, bringing in a robust $34.5M to place a strong second. After that it was last week's champ, the dreadful 2012 ($26.5M | $108.2M) and newcomer Planet 51 ($12.6M). Jim Carrey's so-so A Christmas Carol rounded out the top 5 ($12.2M | $79.7M).

Precious continued to be a strong performer as the lock for a Best Picture nomination gobbled up $11M ($21.4M). The drop from there was steep: the hilarious Men Who Stare at Goats only managed an extra $2.7M ($27.6M), just ahead of the mediocre Couples Retreat ($1.9M | $105M), the awful The Fourth Kind ($1.7M | $23.3M) and the resilient, pointless Law Abiding Citizen ($1.6M | $70M). In limited release, Broken Embraces soared to a $54,000 per theater average while Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans had a decent, if unspectacular start ($9519 per). Should have had more break-dancing. Seriously.

It's just that there are so few movies geared to teenage girls, they'll flock to any one that does.

I wouldve glossed over this whole post if it wasnt for the " Bella nearly being fucked to death " sentence.

Awesome captions. Is that really true? About the next book?

I think it's the last book where things get really weird and Mormon-y. But yes, she is almost fucked to death and Jacob does fall in love with a baby. Bella's baby actually.

Pssh, you gotta wait until movie 4 for that pile of crazy...but don't forget the vampire caesarian where he has to chew the baby out of Bella. That's clearly gonna make all the tweens swoon.

To be fair, exit polling shows that half the audience was over 21, so it's not just teenage girls who are morons.

Exactly. The rest of the U.S. population doesn't get off that easy.

I don't get the appeal of the movie series and the books but hell I guess it wasn't made for me.

Your contempt for popular culture makes want to vomit. They are morons because they went to see a love story with teenagers and are geared towards them? And didn't see movies that are in limited release and don't appeal towards them. How about "The Heads of Studios are Morons"?

I'm willing to concede that the heads of studios are morons, too. And I would strongly disagree that the Twilight books are about teenagers falling in love. They are more about not having sex until marriage (a terrible, terrible idea), men being potentially violent and emotionally remote to their women (another terrible idea) and all sorts of other weird, Mormon crap that should be avoided. And I love popular culture, asshole! Just not bad and phony popular culture.
