Buen Provecho (Cooking Class)
Add some South American sizzle to your recipe repertoire with today's class held at the Museum of Latin American Art. Learn to make arepas, a massively versatile Venezuelan dish made with corn bread, then filled with eggs, meat, tomatoes, salad, cheese, shrimp, or fish. 11:30 a.m.
Storytelling with Shadows
Today the International Puppetry Museum hosts an excellent activity for your child, niece, nephew or neighbor kid. Head to Pasadena for this puppetry workshop where you and your little one will learn the art of storytelling through shadows. It is recommended that children "be old enough to cut with exacto knives." (Are any of us, really?) 2 p.m.
MOCA's 30th Birthday Party
The Museum of Contemporary Art has hit the big 3-0, and to celebrate, they invite all members to a special viewing of "Collection: MOCA’s First Thirty Years," an exhibit inspired by their permanent collection. The night is also dotted with performances and "unexpected interventions" by LA-based artist collective My Barbarian. 7 p.m.
Beer Tasting & Gallery Reception
Tonight the Jeanie Madsen Gallery in Santa Monica invites you to an exhibit and simultaneous artisanal beer tasting, celebrating art and craft brew simultaneously. Featured artists include Scott Horton and Byron Buchanan, who used 60's & 70's rock & roll icons as inspiration for their mixed media pieces. Live music is also on the agenda with performaces by London Shover and Jack Cloud. No word on the beer selections, but at least you know it won't be PBR. 8 p.m.
SHAG: "Autumn's Come Undone"
Or, if you'd rather sip the traditional bubbly instead of a brew, check out the latest works by Josh Agle at the Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City tonight. So we read, this collection "represents a turning point for Agle, adopting darker themes and a deeper palette to explore life’s excesses." Get a sneak peak at the hedonism here. 8 p.m.
