Remember in 2007 when a major LAUSD computer glitch caused thousands of teachers to go without a paycheck while other teachers, including former ones six feet under, got paid extra? That's all fixed now, but the school district is still seeking $9.4 million from 2,400 current and former employees.
“Thousands of honest employees voluntarily paid back the money. We are aggressively pursuing the hold-outs who are, in effect, stealing dollars that should be spent on instruction or to save jobs,” said LAUSD General Counsel Dave Holmquist in a statement.
Some 35,000 employees were overpaid $60 million the Business Tools for Schools (BTS) payroll system royally screwed the district and employees. Some teachers earned a few hundred extra dollars with others earning close to $100,000.
“Most employees either have repaid the District or have made arrangements to have the amount withheld from their paychecks,” said Megan Reilly, Chief Financial Officer. “The money must be paid back. It is also urgently needed at this time to stop some layoffs.”
An LA County Superior Court judge is "poised" to grant the district judgements against two employees--one who received $96,000 and another who got $52,000, according to a news release. A third teacher has settled for the full amount of $40,000. Teachers who owe smaller amounts--the average is $5,000--will be referred to a collection agency and if payment is still refused, ore lawsuits will be filed in 2010, he district promises.

They deserve it. Teachers are underpaid. Let's start giving credit to the people who educate our youth.

are you SERIOUS?
I understand the market is a real bitch right now, but,
there's gotta be a better way to get your name out there.
I say give the names of the knuckleheads that won't return the money,
to the teachers that have to take a 12% salary reduction.
Make THEM take the paycut instead.
the school district thinks i'm one of those who have been overpaid. however, i strongly believe this is not the case. the paycheck they are disputing has a $1,700 payment, but below that, that same $1,700 is deducted. now, i teach math, and i teach my kids that that's a big set of zero pairs.
i've told the district that i wanted a conference with someone to discuss this matter. instead, they've started taking $200 out of my checks, without my authorization. apparently, the union has allowed the district to have direct withdrawals to those who received direct deposit. frick.
i'm not giving back the money because i don't owe the money. stupidheads.
I'm rich beeyotch!
True story: Most teachers are overpaid.
Are you serious about teachers being over paid. All the volunteer work they do after school grading papers. Some do it on campus and others take it home. Then giving up up their week-ends many times to prepare their material for the week. Some frequently spend their own money to make copies so all students can have work. Some buy extra matierials to make their classrooms look more exciting and motivating for the students. Some teachers spend extra time with students after school. I can go on and on. Teachers giving their self and their time. There is no over time pay made for those hours. Many teachers have a passion and love for their profession. They are not paid enough.
