Thornton Scores Hat Trick, Donovan Adds to Galaxy Tally
Chivas USA 'keeper Zach Thornton is going to need to make more room on his mantel.
On Monday, the veteran 'keeper was named to the 2009 MLS Best XI roster following a stellar campaign in which he registered a personal best Goals Against Average (GAA) of 0.87. His league best GAA was well complemented by the 12 shutouts he amassed throughout the season -- also tops in MLS. Thornton first earned the award in 1998 when he helped the Chicago Fire win the MLS Cup.
This time around it is the third in a trio of league honors earned for this year's performance. He began his collection by being named 2009 Goalkeeper of the Year about 2 weeks ago and followed it up by capturing the 2009 Comeback Player of the Year last Tuesday. Thornton was also awarded Team MVP honors by his Chivas USA mates and remains in the running for the league's Save of the Year award to be announced on Wednesday.
Galaxy forward Landon Donovan joins Thornton on the 2009 MLS Best XI roster following what is arguably his best season in MLS. It is the third time in his career that Donovan earns the honor, the other occasions having been after the 2003 and 2008 campaigns. Donovan's 12 goals helped pave the way for the Galaxy to get back into the playoffs after a 3 year stint and ultimately, into the 2009 MLS Cup Final. His leadership was instrumental in the team's turnaround this year and a victory in the MLS Cup Final on Sunday in Seattle would be a fitting end to the story.
Donovan's award adds to the tally of post season honors the Galaxy have already earned following the 2009 Coach of the Year award to Bruce Arena and 2009 Rookie of the Year honors to Omar Gonzalez. The star forward may yet add to that count as he is remains a favorite for 2009 MLS Most Valuable Player award. Considering his playoff performances thus far, he might also earn himself the playoffs MVP award as well.
Congratulations and thanks to all for giving L.A. soccer fans a great season.
