74-Year-Old Busted for Graffiti in Subway Station

johnscott.jpg If you've ever seen the stickers on buses or around stations and bus benches asking "Who is John Scott?" the mystery is over. He is 74-year-old John Scott (yeah, he has a website) of Los Angeles, the oldest tagger (specifically, a slap tagger because they are stickers) caught by LA County Sheriff's Deputies, finds the LA Times. He was arrested this morning, ending a seven-month mystery, at the 7th/Metro Station in downtown after putting up a sticker.

This was a mystery? Several months ago I caught him on video on my cell phone putting one of his stickers on the 780 bus. He saw me take the video and began to threaten me while he was stepping off the bus. I told the bus driver who told me to call Metro. I immediately called Metro and told them about my video but they were completely uninterested. Apparently it was only a mystery to people who didn't really care.

I saw him on the 720 heading west about a year ago. He keeps a suitcase full of stickers with him. Slightly weird type of guy.

Here's where the "seven month mystery" bit comes from, in the Times article: "Seven months ago, deputies began noticing "Who Is John Scott?" stickers being placed on light poles, bus benches and even on the seats of the MTA buses themselves."

Those stickers have been around for years. Keen powers of observation, those cops have.

Yeah, this guy's been at it for at least 2 years. I first noticed the stickers when I moved here two years ago. I randomly saw him on the 720 once talking to some skater teens talking himself up with some lame story about how he's had this exciting mysterious life, although he's clearly just some bum who thinks he's brilliant.

I saw him randomly several more times riding the 720 and walking in Westwood village, so I assume those are his favorite stomping grounds.

He's an older black guy, kind of tall, maybe 6-foot-plus with greying dreadlocks and a beard if I remember correctly, typically seen with a Trenchcoat and carrying a briefcase with one of the orange stickers on it.

"Yeah, this guy's been at it for at least 2 years..."

I remember him from at least 10-12 years ago. He used to ride the #4 a lot in those days.

"He's an older black guy, kind of tall, maybe 6-foot-plus with greying dreadlocks and a beard..."

Yep that's him. I'm surprised it took MTA this long to notice his stickers every where. Is he selling something or what?

I could swear I saw this on a billboard some months back, and thought it was viral marketing for Fringe.

Personally, I really like the guy's shtick. It's quirky and interesting. Ripe stuff for some kind of urban legend ('He was framed!'). Or you know what? I bet it'll turn out to actually be a viral marketing campaign 15 years in the making for a Fox release in early 2010..

No but seriously, the whole thing makes LA feel a little smaller, which is always fun.
