Current Cuts 80 Staffers Amidst Most Profitable Year Ever

currenttvlayoffs.jpg In what is being described as "a major bloodbath," 80 employees between Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and London have been cut from Current's payrolls, reports SFist via Techcrunch. Current says, however, that it is not a cost-cutting move, rather a result of less in-house programming and more outsourced productions. That's not to say all in-house has been cut, television production and programming development will be consolidated "under one roof in Los Angeles with new facilities at LA Center Studios," says the company, which is having its most profitable year since their launch.

Wasn't Current's "thing" supposed to be real media not motivated by profit?

No, Current's thing was supposed to be that most of their content was viewer-created, they upload it to Current's site where it's then voted on.

Which makes it odd that they ever had hundreds of employees in their production offices, when they only produce 4 shows besides the Vanguard stuff.

wiki reference = instant loss of credibility.

You realize Current and any other mass media company employs PR staff and brand managers to keep that profile to their liking. That way they can "supposed to be" anything they wanted to. Even if they were supposed to be viewer-created media. One look at the stuff people get on YouTube should tell you that model wouldn't have been followed for long.
