This morning, as the countdown clock to the 2010 LA Marathon declares there's 131 days until the big event, the official "Stadium to the Sea" course map was released. Beginning at Dodger Stadium, this brand new route takes participants and their supporters through some of Los Angeles' iconic and familiar-the-world-over city and county sights and neighborhoods, including El Pueblo, City Hall, and Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Downtown; Grauman's Chinese Theatre, Hollywood & Vine, and the Sunset Strip in Hollywood; Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills; and from Century City through the Westside to the finish at the shore of the Pacific at Santa Monica Boulevard and Ocean.
Serious discussion of altering the route of the run began to take shape this summer, as planners reacted to a vociferous crowd of people who yearned to see the race, from the perspective of not only the participants but to global spectators watching on television, showcase the landscape and landmarks we're known for. One runner published an Op-Ed in the Times noting that the race was "visually deadening." Her suggested route: "To take in some of the city's more memorable sights, runners could start at Dodger Stadium, go through Chinatown, then up Sunset Boulevard to Hollywood, on to Beverly Hills and Westwood, and finishing at the beach in Santa Monica." Well whadda ya know?
The 2010 LA Marathon takes place on Sunday March 21, 2010.

As convenient as it was for my wife to roll out of bed and watch me run by... I'm glad this course doesn't go RIGHT by my place anymore... Waking up early to beat the road closures was tough. Looks like a pretty cool course so far! Anyone up for a run?
This is gonna be a blast. I lived in Boston for 5 years and every Marathon day was a party. I have a feeling this will be a nice new tradition for us Angelenos. Well done McCourt.
I have heard that they are not doing the LA-bike tour this year. Have you heard anything about that?
I just hope the In N Out at Sunset and Orange opens early on race day. Nothing like a Double Double pit stop.
Don't worry. There will be plenty of people complaining about this route, too. God forbid we should have an ounce of civic identity or pride.
Don't get me wrong--I'm in favor of changing the route every few years. But far too many Angelenos see this ONE DAY as a supreme inconvenience to the sum total of their lives. NIMBYism at its finest.
I wrote to the Marathon folks and asked about the Bike Tour, they gave me a weasely non-answer. Grrrr....
I have only one question:
How are 20,000 runners going to get back from Santa Monica to Dodger's Stadium?
All Marathon runners will be encouraged to park near the finish first thing in the morning. They'll then board shuttle buses from the Santa Monica Civic for the ride to the Start at Dodger Stadium. When the runners finish the race back in Santa Monica, they'll be only blocks from the car.
