John Hodgman at Book Soup tonight.
SCI-Arc is conducting a series of Monday discussions throughout November with new media artists in conjuction with the current exhibition Blow x Blow. Hosted by Joe Day, principal of deegan day design, the talks explore current practice and the challenges of new media installation. The series begins tonight at 7:30 pm with a discussion between artist/architect An Te Liu and ForYourArt founder Bettina Korek.
FILM TALK
Tonight REDCAT welcomes film critic J. Hoberman for a screening and talk on “The Making and Unmaking of Flaming Creatures,” a 1963 experimental film by Jack Smith that was deemed obscene by the New York Criminal Court for its sexually graphic nature. The program begins tonight at 8:30 pm. Tickets are $9, $7 for students and $5 for CalArts’ faculty, staff and students.
BOOKS*
Daily Show correspondent John Hodgman stops by Book Soup tonight from 7-9 pm to promote his latest tome: More Information Than You Require, book two in his Compendium of Complete World Knowledge (or, as it says on the cover, "New Ferret, Same Old Con"). The book is full of fake fun facts, bizarre trivia and oddball photos and un- to semi-practical knowledge.
POETRY
Red Hen Press at Boston Court Performing Arts Center welcomes poets Charles Harper Webb, Ron Koertge, and Lisa Krueger from 7-8 pm at Boston Court Performing Arts Center in Pasadena. Webb is the author of Amplified Dog, winner of the 2005 Benjamin Saltman Award. Ron Koertge’s most recent collection of poetry, Indigo, is slated for release in late fall. Krueger is the author of two books of poetry, Rebloom and Animals the Size of Dreams. Tickets are $10, $5 students & seniors.
TALK
ALOUD at the Central Library hosts Rita Dove, author of Sonata Mulattica, tonight at the Central Library. The former U.S. Poet Laureate will be in discussion with Gail Eichenthal, Program Director, KUSC 91.5 FM, on her recreation of the life of a biracial nineteenth-century virtuoso violinist. Admission is free, but reservations recommended. Parking: 524 S. Flower St. Garage, $1 until 8:45 p.m. with Los Angeles Public Library validation.
