MTA Bus and Car Collide in Silver Lake Last Night, 19 Injured

metro_local_bus.jpg
Last night during rush hour an MTA bus collided with a private vehicle near 1959 N. Glendale Boulevard and the 2 Freeway. "According to Officer Gregory Baek of the Los Angeles Police Department, the No. 92 bus was driving northbound just before the freeway ramp when the accident occurred," explains LA Now. As a result, 19 people suffered injuries, of which 10 "were taken to the hospital," and of those, one "was reported to be in critical condition," according to CBS2. The other nine injuries were described as being "as minor to moderate." Police are currently investigating the cause of the crash, however Sgt. Gregory Hoyte of the Central Traffic Division notes that "the driver seemed to have lost control of the bus and hit the middle divider [also going Northbound on the road] and another object before crashing into the car."

we seem to have some of the worst bus drivers in the country. i wouldn't be surprised if it was their fault. Maybe they should start driving like they are in buses and not Porsches.

I disagree.

Most of the wrecks, clips, or close calls I've seen riding the bus have been caused by the car drivers.

And it's usually because they're driving like it's going to kill them to let a bus get in front of them and slow them down a whole second or two.

Most car drivers don't seem to realize that a bus is the same as a car pool car or passenger van only bigger and carrying a lot more people.

Try to imagine how many more cars would be in front of you if a bus weren't.

i live in the neighborhood and there's a great corner market (h&h) on the corner of allesandro and glendale. the owners always seem to know what's happening in the area. this morning they told me the bus driver had a heart attack before losing control. no idea if it's true, but it's a great reminder that we don't always get the full story.

i agree with photo la. i often see bus drivers driving at very unsafe speeds in congested traffic and pedestrian conditions. its crazy. it's the king of road mentality - move out of the way OR i crush you. there's a country mile separating an articulated bus & a BWM. you're probably safe if you are a passenger in a bus but you damn sure aren't safe on foot or in a small car.

The problem as I see it is that car drivers don't treat buses like propriatary vehicles. This "king of the road" mentality that you speak of is because most drivers will not yield to a bus, so the bus driver ends up having to use his size to intimidate car drivers into yielding.

One bus route I take frequently the driver has to get over from the far right to the far left side of the road in heavy traffic. That's four lanes, in only two blocks in bumper to bumper conditions. If he had to depend on the niceties of L.A. drivers to get over he'd be there all day.

Over all I think most bus drivers have the patience of a saint when it comes to how they're treated on the road.
