Is Yelp Dying a Slow Death in L.A.?

What's happening over at Yelp? The powerhouse of a community-driven review website made a big local announcement today, but one many users are not happy with. Yelp said they are "parting ways" with their most recent community manager, Dawson S. That comes after the exit of Stephy S. (LAist interview) and a slew of others. "Gosh. It seems hard to imagine how Yelp will maintain any sort of credibility in the community when the local leadership changes more frequently than I change my oil," noted one user. The onslaught and Yelp hating continues on the Yelp's talk thread. Previously: 5-Star Yelp reviews go up before restaurant opens.

Sounds like what happened at Citysearch--used to be a great local tool, had a lot of turnover, became non-responsive to users, and now is something I never look at.

Although what the rise of Yelp tells me is that the odds are pretty good that when Yelp declines, there will be something else to take its place. And just as Yelp became better than Citysearch (at least for how I used it), the new something may well be better than Yelp.

I am shocked! We love Dawson. We were just at the Yelp Halloween Party She made us all feel Yelp Elite even if we didn't have the badge.

yelp doesn't care because:

a) they know few if any will leave the site over this, least of all people whose social lives revolve largely around yelp. if they leave, they'll return because they're a little addicted to it.
b) most yelp members who provide their content are not part of the active yelp social network, so this won't register for them at all.
c) most people who use yelp don't use the message boards, therefore they won't even know about this.

I'm going to guess that the 99% of yelp! users that don't manage their social life through a review site will continue to check individual reviews just as often.
