Silver Lake to get a New Library This Month*

When Los Angeles' 72nd library branch opens in two weeks, it will be the first for Silver Lake. Located near the corner of Silver Lake and Glendale boulevards, the 13,600-square-foot facility was built to Gold LEED standards and includes new technology not seen before in L.A.'s system.

The library has a materials handling technology, new to library system, that will check in and sort materials that are placed on a conveyor belt by patrons. The branch will also include self-checkout stations and payment stations where credit or cash can be used.

Throughout the building, quotes from notable Silver Lake residents don the walls in a site-speciic art project by artist Christina Ulke (co-editor/publisher of the Journal of Aesthetics and Protest).

To build the branch to Gold LEED standards, the facility has a shower and changing room for library employees who choose to bicycle to work and light fixtures designed to reduce horizontal and vertical light spill to help preserve “night sky.” Other green elements are solar power, drought tolerant plants and low-flow plumbing.

A grand opening celebration will take place at 10 a.m., Monday November 16th. The branch is located at 2411 Glendale Blvd.

*For the record: This post originally stated that the library was opening on Monday, November 9th.

Thanks for the write-up Zach! I'm one of the librarians at this lovely new branch. BUT, our ribbon-cutting, opening day is Monday, November 16 (rather than next Monday). The following Saturday is an open house, which might be more fun because we're having lots of events and music. Hope to see you there!
