MUERTOS*
Self Help Graphics holds the 36th Annual Dia de los Muertos Celebration at the East LA Civic Center tonight from 5-11 pm. The event features children's art workshops, art and crafts vendors, elaborate altars and local food. Guests will also enjoy a day of the dead fashion walk, live music from top local performers including Killsonic, L'Esprit d'Africque, Ollin, La Santa Cecilia and surprise special guests. One of evening's highlights a traditional public procession featuring people of all ages in colorful calavera face paint and attire. Also: Our guide to Dia de los Muertos events around the city.
BOOKS
Skylight Books welcome Donovan Leitch and C. Allbritton Taylor for a book signing and preview of their cinematic graphic novel One Model Nation tonight at 7:30. The book is scheduled for release on Nov. 11, but check out a sneak peak at the first chapter.
COMEDY
Sara Benincasa takes to the Largo stage tonight with her one-woman comedy show Agorafabulous: Mostly True Tales from Sara Benincasa. She’s a rising star in the NY alternative comedy scene and often pulls the comedy from her own struggles with agoraphobia. “A surprisingly poignant celebration of weirdness and quirks--emotional and psychological--Sara's stories will inspire, delight, and occasionally terrify you.” 9:30 pm. Tickets are $10.
TALK
The film series "Reel Talk with Stephen Faber" continues tonight with That Evening Sun, a Southern Gothic drama with Hal Holbrook about a bitter feud between an aging Tennessee farmer and the tenant who moves on to his property. Guest speaker will be writer-director Scott Teems. The screening begins at 7 pm, tickets are $17.

Was a little let down by Self Help's latest dia de los muertos celebration. It wasn't so much filled with the art that made it a great event of the past, especially since it was just a big circle of vendors. some of which had very... unday of the dead items like a cheech and chong doll, "I love my dad and his tattoos" shirts and other things that just made it seem like a glorified flea market and less of a celebration of the dead.
