Despite his aggressive campaign full of neighborhood town halls across the state, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom announced this afternoon that he has dropped out of the race for California Governor. He was the only major name running for the position but his fundraising and poll numbers lagged behind Attorney General Jerry Brown, who has yet to officially announce a run for Governor. Gavin's statement is below:
It is with great regret I announce today that I am withdrawing from the race for governor of California. With a young family and responsibilities at city hall, I have found it impossible to commit the time required to complete this effort the way it needs to — and should be — done. This is not an easy decision. But it is one made with the best intentions for my wife, my daughter, the residents of the city and county of San Francisco, and California Democrats.
When I embarked on this campaign in April, my goal was to engage thousands and thousands of Californians dedicated to reforming our broken system and bringing change to Sacramento.
I would like to thank those supporters, volunteers, and donors who have worked so hard on my behalf. I have been humbled by their support and am indebted to their efforts. They represent the spirit of change and determination essential to putting California back on the right track.
I will continue to fight for change and the causes and issues for which I care deeply — universal health care, a cleaner environment, and a green economy for our families, better education for our children, and, of course, equal rights under the law for all citizens.
Citing four unnamed sources, the blog Mayor Sam, appears to have broken the news earlier this afternoon before Newsom's announcement.

Secret lover announcement in 3,2, ...
You beat SFist posting this announcement, and you were able to post the whole statement versus SFGATE (aka SF Chronicle) which just posted a short blip. Maybe we do toke too much in SF -- nah. Kudos to you.
hehe... he's hiking somewhere in the Appalachian.
Now what, California?
I definitely did not see that coming. There's got to be some story behind this, other than funding.
I do not want to vote for Jerry Brown, who is an ass. BTW his office has just acknowledged it illegally recorded phone calls. Oh good.
Maybe Gary Coleman will run again.
Zachie, baby, buddy - those SF pot smokers gave credit to your old friend Mayor Sam for breaking this story before it happened. How about some love for a neighbor, huh? :)
Oh wait - now I see it. I swear I wasn't toking up. Thanks for the props! :)
I'm still pissed at Jerry for not investigating Michael Duvall.
Here's Duvall the Assembly Utilities and Commerce Committee vice chairman, bragging about banging a lobbyist from Sempra Energy, but our Atty General finds nothing suspicious, no conflict of interest, no reason to put Duvall under a microscope. That's bullshit. It's just another politician protecting one of his own.
Fuck Jerry Brown for Governor!
