I Can Has Claws! Santa Monica Bans Cat Declawing

Hello, People's Republic! Santa Monica this week passed a new law banning cat declawing within city limits, reports the Santa Monica Daily Press. When it goes into effect in December, the city will be the second in California with such a ban. West Hollywood already has the law on the books and as of January 1st, 2010, a state law will go into effect restricting cities from making such a ban.

Those behind the law say declawing is painful and can change a cat's behavior--peeing, pooping, biting--leading to abandonment and relinquishment.

Opponents of the law also believe abandonment and relinquishment (and even euthanization) will happen if owners can't clip Mr. Aggressive Meow's nails.

Still, for those wanting to declaw, Los Angeles has no such law on the books (yet) so a solution is only a few minutes away.

Meow!

good! de-clawing is FUCKED UP.

There's a difference between clipping and declawing a cat's nails. You can still clip them in a humane manner. that's fine. It involves clipping off the dead part of the nail and that's that.

Declawing is something else entirely. It's the human equivalent of amputation, and that's what these braindead owners that do it don't understand. It's like cutting off your fingers and many vets don't even do it well. Some have done it without knocking the cat out.

Now owners of declawed cats will say, "My cat is fine." Cats adapt. You would adapt if your fingers were cut off. But it's an incredibly inhumane thing to do and I don't even like cats.

Agree with Spokker: problem with your cat's nails? Clip them regularly. Declawing is animal cruelty, and leads to health and behavioral issues for cats -- which leads to a lot of "abandonment and relinquishment," the very argument used by opponents to to the ban on declawing. Bottom line is: think twice before adopting a cat; if you can't handle a cat being a cat, please abstain: there is enough cat dumping at shelters already.

I believe cat declawing should be allowed, and a city council should not have a say as to whether or not it should be allowed, that is between a vet and the owner to decide.
