Metro is using their new blog the right way--with timely updates. From today: "The Gold Line is currently shut down between Highland Park and Southwest Museum stations. At about 1:15 p.m. an umbrella from a neighboring residence blew onto city power lines above train tracks, creating a potentially dangrous situation for the trains beneath. DWP, Fire Department and Metro officials are on the scene. Metro riders are advised to use either Metro bus lines 81 or 83 or to take the Gold Line to either Highland Park or Southwest Museum station and board buses that are shuttling passengers between the two stations. We’ll be posting updates as they occur." UPDATE: Trains are running on a single track, expect 10-15 min delays this afternoon, says the LA Times.

Although the Source blog is a much needed resource for the regular Metro rider, I'm hoping this particular issue is cleared up soon. Considering their post didn't appear until over an hour after the incident happened, it makes me wonder how long of a delay will occur between the issue being resolved and a post appearing on the site stating such. In a couple of hours rush hour is going to start and Metro hasn't done a good job of advertising their new blog to the average bus/train rider....
Nice point and good questions, M.
Their Twitter was updated after the blog. In theory, the best practice would be tweeting out from the control room when a delay happens that appears to be more of a major nature. We don't want every little delay that ends up being nothing, but it should take an hour to realize that, "oh, our constituents/customers should be informed."
It is nice, however, that they are finally doing something at least. Still, lots of work ahead of them to improve.
Looks like they've opened up traffic on one line of track: http://thesource.metro.net/2009/10/28/gold-line-now-running-on-single-track/
Hey guys thanks for checking out The Source and posting about the updates. We're still working on getting the blog up to speed, and there's actually some very specific technical problems that are creating a delay in posts showing up, but it's being worked on. That being said, we're eager for comments, suggestions, and ideas so we can continue to improve the experience and give readers and customers what they want... hit us up at thesource@metro.net
Thanks, Fred! Are technical issues stopping Metro from using Twitter in a timely manner, too?
Not sure, don't think so. The Metro staff are just trying to get all their web stuff/social networking/blog stuff together... and it hasn't quite meshed yet. I've discovered as an outsider in such a large bureaucracy, sometimes even the simplest things become ridiculously complex. But, the good news is that they are trying, and sooner or later it's going to come together and become a great tool to candidly communicate issues with riders and other interested parties. Stay tuned... and I'm passing all comments along up the chain.
I had a great time reading around your post as I read it extensively. Excellent writing! I am looking forward to hearing more from you.

Gold
