L.A.'s Outdoor Smoking Ban Proposal is Back

A Los Angeles city council committee will look into the long-delayed outdoor smoking ban draft ordinance this morning. If approved, it will then move on to the full city council where if passed, the ban will go into affect after a six-month education campaign.

Basically, the ban says no smoking--unless you're just walking by--within 10 feet of an established outdoor dining area (think restaurants and cafes with sidewalk dining or outdoor food courts). For undefined dining areas like a food truck or cart, smoking will be verboten within 40 feet (that's because the location of the truck or cart has its own 30-foot radius). So no lighting up while in line for Kogi BBQ, kids.

The ban, however, will not affect bars and nightclubs that are 18 and over and private events.

I'm still generally against smoking bans, but 10 feet sounds way more reasonable than 20 feet, for some reason.

Smoking should be banned from the planet.

Smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, using marijuana, all pose a health risk. In the case of smoking cigarettes and ingesting alcoholic beverages, there are clear warning labels on the packages. We as a society have regulated cigarette and alcohol purchases, and tax the hell out of it. But let's not go into Prohibition mode.

Let people do what they want to do. When we start to regulate or prohibit personal choice and behavior, we slide down a slippery slope. Every bar and most restaurants offer patio outdoor facilities to give smokers the ability to light up away from those who do not appreciate the smoke.

Adolf Hitler was the first political leader to ban smoking in government buildings and indoor areas. Ironically, his own girlfriend and his secretary smoked cigarettes.

It's nice that cigarettes have warning labels, but it does me mo good if smokers poison me with their secondhand smoke. It does not make sense for me to think "Hey I'm breathing this garbage, but because the smokers were warned it was bad for them, I do not mind"

"Adolf Hitler was the first political leader to ban smoking in government buildings and indoor areas. ""

Hitler was also against bank robbery. So does that mean you are for it?

The problem is that smoking causes measurable damage to the health of anyone standing near the smoker, unlike drinking alcohol.

I think people should be allowed to smoke cigarettes only in designated indoor spaces where the only people breathing in secondhand smoke are other smokers.

I THINK PEOPLE SHOULD REGULATE THEMSELVES. IF YOU ARE HEADED TOWARD PEOPLE TRYING TO EAT PUT YOUR DAMN CIGARETTE OUT OR AT THE LEAST DONT HIT IT RIGHT THEN. JUST PUT IT DOWN AND GO RIGHT PAST. COMMON COURTESY IS DEAD IN THIS SOCIETY AND ALL THE LAWS AND REGULATIONS ARENT GOING TO RETURN RESPECT TO A SOCIETY THIS OUT OF CONTROL. MY OPINION IS A SWIFT KICK IN STOMACH TO THOSE WHO OFFEND IN THIS MANNER WOULD BE FAR MORE EFFECTIVE....BUT THATS JUST ME!

I'm gonna have to agree with you. A little common sense and courtesy would solve a lot of problems in society now a days.

I'll smoke and blow it in your face, twit.

If anyone's crazy, it's you for sure.

One of the risks of being out in public is encountering people engaging in behavior that you might deem inappropriate. The magic of private property is that the owner can set their own rules concerning the use of and the type of conduct people may engage in. Laws such as public smoking bans blur the lines and violate property rights. As a pipe smoker I've actually received more positive comments than negative which could be an indicator that the average person is more concerned with the smell than the actual health risks of breathing in a small amount of smoke for a brief minute. The point is, please stop using the force of government to force your views and will on others. Let people be free to choose.

While an adamant anti-smoker for various reasons, I do agree with you on pipe-smoking and scents. I myself have maintained that a pipe indeed smells better than a cigarette when smoked.

I guess it really comes down to respect and common decency for others.

While were at it...can we ban the wearing of patchouli oil?

Talk about your stinks.

You're absolutely right. Smokers need to have respect for others and be mindful of their smoke.
