It's time to get into the winter spirit. Beginning this afternoon, an 8,000 square foot outdoor ice rink will open to the public in Santa Monica with the unveiling of a 45-foot ice sculpture in promotion of the Blu-ray disc and DVD release of Ice Age 3 Dawn of the Dinosaurs. Supposedly, the 133,000-pound sculpture of the character Scrat will break the Guinness World Record for Tallest Ice Sculpture.

The current record for the Tallest Ice Sculpture is 40.28 feet and was achieved by Michel Amann (France) in Ski Dubai, Dubai, United Arab Emirates on April 20, 2006.

Besides the corporate angle of this, the good news is that this ice rink, located at 5th and Arizona, will be open through January 31st. $10 will get you on the ice with skate rental. Hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturdays. Today's opening and ice sculpture unveiling begins at 4 p.m.

And what about downtown Los Angeles? Downtown on Ice will open on November 19th at Pershing Square.
