Downtown Sees a Trio of Openings Tonight: Regal Cinemas, Michael Jackson & Lakers/Clippers

It's a big night for downtown Los Angeles, more specifically L.A. Live.

  • 6 p.m.: "This Is It," the Michael Jackson documentary, premieres (some wonder if some movie premieres will move from Hollywood to downtown. The movie 2012 will premiere here next week.).
  • 7 p.m.: Lakers and Clippers open basketball season at the Staples Center
  • 9 p.m.: L.A. Live's newest addition, Regal Cinemas opens to the public. The 14-screen, 3,772 seat theater will play This Is It will play on all screens through at least this weekend with shows starting approximately every 10 minutes.

Eric Richardson at blogdowntown has an excellent guide to the theatre with prices, parking, etc.

This is exactly what LA needed. Another overpriced tourist trap. I mean seriously. Did this place create any jobs? By jobs I mean employment that pays more then $9 an hour. Try finding a decent place to live on $9 an hour. LA doesnt need any more over priced entertainment venues. LA needs affordable housing. Instead of spending money at 'LA Live' I'll be downloading movies via bittorrent so I can pay my expensive rent and help pay for my landlords Mercedes and mistresses.

to the above:

FUCKING AGREED!

And parking across the street for $5? Guess ill never be going to The Regal.

Actually, this is exactly what downtown needed. Most of us end up going to either Alhambra or Hollywood. If you don't live in downtown, then you have no idea what we've been missing here.

I agree, that LA Live is trying to become the Times Square of LA, but if it brings in revenue to the city, and provides another option for downtowners, I'm all for it.

If you think living in LA is expensive, you should try living in Manhattan for a year or two.

There are far cheaper places to live in LA, even in downtown. You just have to look for them.

Laemmle's in DTLA just shut down on Sunday. I was there to see Zombieland and the owner informed us that they were closing their doors that night since they couldn't compete with LA Live. :-/
