Sanrio's adorable and iconic Hello Kitty is celebrating her 35th birthday, and as part of the worldwide party, Three Apples has opened up at Royal/T where the Los Angeles festivities are underway. Today happens to be "Super Fan Day" with hour after hour of Hello Kitty events for the enthused or HK-curious.

Some artists happen to be among those who are fans of HK. LAist heard from Buff Monster, who we last saw in July for a Summer Party and Signing at JapanLA event. For Three Apples, Buff painted 35 small Hello Kitty panels, as well as more artwork on display right now for fans to check out. See what Buff Monster has to say about life with Hello Kitty.

LAist: Why do you think Hello Kitty is so popular?

Buff Monster: She is so cute and simple and awesome, how could she not be popular? I love seeing her appear on more and more products everyday. You think you’ve seen it all, but then you see something new that just blows your mind. I love it.

What is your favorite memory of Hello Kitty and/ or favorite Hello Kitty thing?

I have so much Hello Kitty stuff, its really hard to narrow it down. I really love the little cell phone charms that Sanrio makes. The detail on them is just incredible. I also have a 4 inch tall mini candy dispenser. It’s like the big ones you put a quarter into, but its tiny and in the shape of Hello Kitty. It’s just amazing!

Tell us about your piece for the Three Apples show.

I did two things for the show. First, I did a nice painting of Hello Kitty sitting on top of a mound, surrounded by geometric mountains with Hello Kitty faces. And in Japanese kanji in an arc above her head it reads, “Pink is Power.” It’s a very bright, happy, peaceful image that really celebrates Hello Kitty. The other piece I did for the show was to take Hello Kitty’s head and add a cherry and some other things to really make her mine. Then I reproduced her in different colors on 35 wood panels; each is unique and each stands for one of the 35 years that she’s been around. Hello Kitty is such a huge icon that I wanted to make a set of very iconic pieces.

Hello Kitty's 35th Birthday Celebration runs through November 15th @ Royal/T
