New Public Art Installed at LAPD Headquarters, Do You Like?

The new abstract public art at the Police Administration Building in downtown is garnering some nice discussion and attention, as all good art should. Artist Peter Shelton tells blogdowntown that the six "beasts of burden" should have viewers making up their own stories as to what they are.

And people are: ink splots, cow splat, blobs, pigs, butts have all been heard.

Outgoing LAPD Chief William Bratton is not the biggest fan, nor are a number of officers, says LA Times columnist Steve Lopez. That's not a bad thing as this is a good juxtaposition between expression and enforcement.

I'm personally a big fan, but readers of LAist (and those who hated the NoHo Gateway public art project), your thoughts?

I see someone couching on the ground in fear. Very fitting for L.A.P.D.

A cowering black figure.

Given the history of the LAPD, maybe not the best choice.

it's a training device for kicking and beating a suspect when he's down.

I scooped up a smaller version of this during my morning walk with my dog.

hey KTLA's Eric Spillman, could you investigate how much public money paid for this "art"?
I'm all for supporting local artists but this shiat is not ART.

It was half a mil. Yup, it cost $499,999.50 + tax.

Wonder if they got all their materials from Blicks?

yup... I just read the LA Times on this... but what is the "real" cost of this pile of shiatz?

From the LA Times" ...said Police Chief William J. Bratton, who sounded as if he were personally insulted by the installation.

Bratton said he first drove past the work and later walked back to see whether "it's as ugly up close as it is when you're driving by."

The answer was yes, and he sounded mad enough to have the artist arrested."

I don't know. It kind looks like poo. Makes sense though. Downtown does have a lot of poo.

Sculptures officially have more places to sit in downtown LA than people. These are hideous sculptures given the nature of the project. In a sculpture garden they'd be fantastic but awful for this particular project.

It needs a steam valve to complete the installation ("steaming pile of...")

I'm starting to think I'm the only one who likes these! :)

I kind of like them too, but I think it helps to see them juxtaposed in the environment and in the context of the other pieces rather than just a close up. I think the world could use more quirky things in it that make people stop and think for a second.

Is this the Rodney King Memorial?

According to the only photo referring to the new installation, no I do not like.
I did follow the link to the blogdowntown article and found myself
somewhat liking the new additions.
I'll make a point to see the installation in person though.
Zach, thanks for the write up on this.
(By the way, the blogdowntown comments are almost all positive.)

Thanks, pianoarthur. It's funny cause the photo I chose is my favorite.

Yeah, photo #1 is easier in an anthropomorphic sense to look at than #6.
Sculpture in Pic #7 taken from 'War of the Worlds'?

LOVE.
inspire imagination.
Very smart art.
