Videos: Making Fun of L.A. Drivers and Rain

It rains and all of the sudden there are crashes everywhere. In fact, there were 186 between midnight and earlier this morning. All this ridiculousness means fodder for comedians and the like, and, no doubt, a couple humorous ones surfaced yesterday on local blogs. Above, via Curbed LA, Conan O'Brien teases his new home and below, via the LA Now and LA Observed, a mock movie trailer for yet another Los Angeles disaster flick.

As odd as it sounds, at least we don't do it as often. Even folks in Atlanta, Ga. Don't know how to drive in the rain and they face it a lot more than we do.

You know, LA is full of transplants, transplants from places accustomed to a bit more rain. What's their excuse?

Seriously, I thought that too, about the transplants. (Disclaimer: I am a transplant myself)

Although in everyone's defense, the first rain DOES kick up all the oil and other filth on the streets, making a nice slippery mess. I fishtailed once yesterday, but was laughing as it happened. (It was on a surface street. If it was on the freeway, I probably wouldn't be here writing this...)

I thought it was common knowledge that turning traction is reduced and breaking distance increased with water, but every year people seem to forget. Everyone continues to speed, accelerate through turns and I hear skids all over the place. I took the extra time to walk to work today rather than bike so I wouldn't have to be on the road with people driving like idiots.

Speed? It took me 25-minutes longer to get to work, and to get home yesterday and today. People drive at 30-40mph on the highway here when it's drizzling.

I'm only on surface streets since I don't own a car so I don't see what it's like on highways, but I see people fish tailing and skidding all over the place just going down the street.

hey. that's me playing the yelling traffic cop in the Tonight Show skit. Look for another one tonight!
