Polanski Finishing Film from Jail

Director Roman Polanski may be sitting in a Zurich jail cell facing extradition to the United States, but that's not stopping him from finishing his film, The Ghost. He is giving instructions so that the film will be finished by February when it will premiere at the Berlin Film Festival.

"He can make his wishes known from his cell," explained Robert Harris, the film's screenwriter. "I don't think he can make phone calls, but he can communicate. What people think of the film is another matter. Whether the film can rise above the circumstances in which the director now finds himself I don't know. We will test to the upper limits the notion that there’s no such thing as bad publicity."

On the day of Polanski's arrest, editing of the film had just finished. The film stars Pierce Brosnan playing a British prime minister who is accused of war crimes. The director fled the country after he was found guilty of rape.
