Police are currently searching a Hollywood neighborhood after an after-school shooting near Helen Bernstein High School. At 1:55 p.m., police received a call about shots fired on the 1300 block of North Wilton Place. A 16-year-old girl was shot in the hip area, according to police. LAUSD officials say she is in stable condition.
Witnesses say they saw three male juveniles run from the shooting area, but saw no weapons, explained LAPD Officer Bruce Borihanh. The small search area is bounded by Wilton to the east, Van Ness to the west, La Mirada to the north and Lexington to the south.
The shooting prompted "campus protection" at the high school and at a few nearby schools, which has since been lifted, according to LAUSD officials. An automatic phone tree system will later communicate information about the incident to parents at all the affected schools.
Update, 5:20 p.m.: At least one school is still under lockdown, according to one teacher stuck at the school who e-mailed LAist.
Update, 6:45 p.m.: The lockdown at Santa Monica Blvd. Community Charter School has been lifted, according to one teacher who was not allowed to leave.
Update, 6:52 p.m.: Despite what officials at LAUSD's public information said, a handful of schools were under lockdown until at least 6:30 p.m. when the perimeter was opened, according to LAPD officials. No suspect was found.
