Yesterday, Gov. Schwarzenegger signed two bills into law, both of which focus on restricting operation of a motor vehicle to previous DUI offenders, reports the Daily News. Assemblyman Mike Feur (D-Los Angeles) has authored AB 91, calling for the implementation of a pilot program in four counties that will put an ignition interlock device in "every vehicle owned or operated by a first-time DUI offender."
The device is placed on the car's dashboard, and tests the driver's blood alcohol level. The vehicle will not start if the driver is intoxicated. Such a device is also at the core of SB 598, which was authored by State Sen. Bob Huff (R-Diamond Bar), and "will allow repeat DUI offenders to apply for a restricted driver's license if they install" the ignition lock on their vehicles. Schwarzenegger cites a need to make access to driving harder for DUI offenders part of an ongoing focus on public road safety.

I would rather see legislation that gets DUI offenders out of the driver's seat entirely.
We have those laws already, they don't work. It's obvious after drunk drivers have killed hundreds of thousands of people. The only way to stop a drunk from driving is to stop a car from being on the road with a drunk driving it!
i had one of those. they dont work. i couldnt get the car to start most of time- and i was sober. my friend was wasted and blew into it and the car started.
worthless technology and more worthless laws.
people are going to drink and drive, there is nothing anyone can do about it.
"people are going to drink and drive, there is nothing anyone can do about it."
you're an idiot. so using your genius thinking, men are gonna rape women, people are gonna beat/shoot/stab/kill other people, kids will be abandoned/abused and there is nothing anyone can do about it so we just shouldn't care, right?
again, you're an idiot.
here is a novel concept, people...how about not drinking and then getting behind the wheel? no one makes anyone else drink to oblivion and then act like a moron.
how about taking a fucking taxi or the train or the bus or having a designated driver. is this really rocket science?
How about getting rid of this 2am last call time? How many times do you notice people chugging two or three back at last call just to get in some beer before the doors close?
A later last call would mean you'll be able to pace your drinking through the night.
Nice idea. The problem is that all you do is push the chugging back.
I remember having "Two for the road" back in Miami, when the bars closed at 5AM.
StreetCloud...Don't be a moron, the concept of Ignition Interlock Devices is not invalid because of your (supposed) experience.
And if what you wrote was actually true, you can't judge an entire program on one faulty experience.

Javier, good point. Why does California force bars to close and KICK DRUNK PEOPLE OUT at 2am?
