A Field Poll released this morning has Attorney General Jerry Brown comfortably leading San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom by 20-points in the race for governor. Results indicate Brown at 47 percent with Newson at 27 percent.
Meanwhile, the three Republican candidates have less succinct results. "About half of GOP primary voters (49%) are undecided. Among those offering a preference former eBay head Meg Whitman receives 22% of the vote, former Congressman Tom Campbell 20% and State Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner 9%," explained the poll (.pdf).
Another intresting tidbit: "When voters are asked to choose between the Democrats and their lesser known GOP rivals in general election match-ups, both Brown and Newsom best each of the Republicans. Brown’s leads, however, are large and range from 21 to 25 points. By contrast, Newsom’s leads are in the single digits."
Thanks for the tip, torrmoz

Ever since Jerry Brown decided for all of us that Duvall shouldn't even be investigated for what appears to be a major conflict of interest, if not a case of out right bribery, (Sempra Energy's lobbyist buying favorable legislation in exchange for sex), I'm no longer all that jazzed about Brown for Governor.
Plus I got this e-mail yesterday from Common Cause which may explain why 'ol Jer is reluctant to pursure an investigation into Duvall's activities, and Sempra may or may not have done that was illegal.
Begin e-mail from Common Cause...

Ask Why Bass and Brown
Scuttle Duvall / Lobbyist Investigation – Is it the Money?
California Common Cause, a non-partisan citizens group organized around government accountability, expressed outrage that both Assembly Speaker Karen Bass and Attorney General Jerry Brown are turning a blind eye to recent allegations that a Sempra Energy lobbyist engaged in a sexual affair with Republican Assemblymember Michael Duvall at the same time she was lobbying him to oppose renewable energy legislation.
“It’s time to take off the blinders and eye patches. The Assembly Ethics Committee and the Attorney General have a duty to the public to investigate whether the Sempra lobbyist’s sexual affair with former Assembly member Duvall compromised his actions as a lawmaker,” said Derek Cressman, Regional Director of State Operations for Common Cause’s Western States. “Their unwillingness to even ask questions makes you wonder what else might come out.”
California Government Code Section 86205, reads:
No lobbyist or lobbying firm shall: (a) Do anything with the purpose of placing any elected state officer, legislative official, agency official, or state candidate under personal obligation to the lobbyist, the lobbying firm, or the lobbyist's or the firm's employer.
California Common Cause Executive Director, Kathay Feng commented, “The people have a right to know what is happening in Sacramento. California law prohibits lobbyists from engaging in behavior that would compromise a lawmaker. The Attorney General has an obligation to enforce the law. Why won’t Jerry Brown even investigate?”
Sempra contributed $10,310 to Brown in 2006, and $11,200 to Bass between 2006 and 2009. From 2007 to 2008, Sempra gave the California Democratic Party $291,000 and gave the Democrats another $88,000 so far this year.
Thanks for reminding me of that e-mail, jrb, I got that, too!
Kinda makes you think.
http://calitics.com/diary/10223/cagov-newsom-campaign-goes-after-jerry-browns-gop-fundraiser
In an email sent out to their list, Gavin Newsom's campaign manager Nick Clemons attacks Jerry Brown on the story that David Dayen broke over the weekend, Brown's headlining of a Republican DA Mike Ramos Fundraiser.
We were astonished to learn from The San Bernardino Sun and Calitics.com that Attorney General Jerry Brown last week was the guest of honor at a fundraiser for San Bernardino District Attorney Mike Ramos, a right-wing Republican, that raised almost $100,000 for the DA's re-election campaign.
In a real irony, this was the same week that Mayor Gavin Newsom headlined a fundraising event in Dallas for the Human Rights Campaign.
In his introductory remarks for Ramos, Brown called the Republican incumbent, "a real fighter." But exactly whom has Ramos been fighting for?
Ramos has a "colorful" record, including an ongoing "assistance of investigation" into other officeholders who accuse Ramos of bias by, um, the Attorney General. (This is the point that the SB Sun address. )It will be interesting to see how this whole thing plays out with the Democratic primary electorate and the press.
They updated the lead with the fact that after resetting the margin of error in tallying votes from Northern California, Whitman and Campbell are running even.
