Recession Obsession: Falafel 'Burritos' that Will Fill Your Tummy

A Recession Obsession is, 1) a meal so great that it sticks in your mind long after digestion's end, and, 2) plays nice with your sensitive wallet. Is there a better place than Los Angeles to eat a wide variety of amazing food that so happens to be inexpensive? Probably not. We're as lucky as we are well fed. We last obsessed over Delicious Pig Butt and Frozen Yogurt 3.0. Today, we obsess...

Los Angeles has a fascination, perhaps an obsession, with burritos. Although the Mexican treat may be the most popular around town, other countries have their wraps as well. The twittering Indian food truck chef, Sumat Pardel, taught us about frankies and today we bring you the lafa wrap.

At Pita Kitchen, a sidewalk cafe in Sherman Oaks, you choose your protein (falafel or chicken and beef shawarmas, kabobs, kaftas or schitzels) and how you want it presented--pita, lafa wrap or straight on a plate with sides. Our favorite is the lafa wrap, a thinner pita bread with no pocket. Instead, it gets rolled like a burrito with other ingredients. For example, a falafel lafa wrap comes rolled in hummus, tahini, tomatoes, cucumber and lettuce (add hot sauce to make it extra delicious).

What does this filling lafa wrap cost you? $6 for the falafel and $7 for any of the meat versions. It's a great deal because a) it's a big dish (if you're not starving, you can eat half and save the other half for later) and b) all meals are made fresh to order on the grill (once in a power outage, they were the only restaurant able to say open for business). Any of the dishes served with a regular pita instead will cost $1 less while plates cost a few bucks more.

Pita Kitchen, which is cash only, is located on 14500 1/2 Van Nuys Blvd. (at Ventura) in Sherman Oaks, 91403

Thanks for taking the reigns this week Zachyboy!

¡Dios mío! That Sunset falafel looks hearty

Pita Kitchen! This was the first place I went to in LA after my 2006 whirlwind Doner Kebabs in Europe tour, and I was not disappointed. While still fundamentally different, there's a flavor satisfaction that I just don't find at most other schwarma spots around town.

I like the Pita kitchen. I just wish the falafel were bigger. The size makes for more fried/less soft middle. I'm not complaining, just a preference. And the prices definately beat most other places serving similar dishes.

I sooo miss this place since moving out of Sherman Oaks. Haven't found it's replacement yet on the westside. Few have come close but just not quite there.

You have to try Sunnin Labanese Cafe in Westwood.
On the Corner of westoood and Santa Monica. Awesome food. Not as cheap as Pita Kitchen, but worth it.

I've eaten many a meal at Sunnin. =]. They are different enough that I don't compare them with each other. I can't wait till their new expansion opens up across the street.

Wow, I'm so glad to see that other people find Pita Kitchen so special, too! Rock!
