A poll released the day before Attorney General Jerry Brown announced possible gubernatorial aspirations said he would likely win if pitted against the three current Republican candidates.
Brown, a Democrat, leads Republican candidates by at least 9 percent. Conversely, candidate and current San Fransicso Mayor Gavin Newsom trails Republicans by up to 6 percent, according to the poll by Rasumussen Reports, which notes "if [he] were to win the [Democrat] nomination, the political gravity of the state would likely give him a boost in the general election." The primary will be held next year June.
Here's the poll's breakdown:
Brown (D) 45%, Poizner (R) 32%
Brown (D) 44%, Whitman (R) 35%
Brown (D) 44%, Campbell (R) 34%
Campbell (R) 42%, Newsom (D) 36%
Whitman (R) 41%, Newsom (D) 36%
Poizner (R) 40%, Newsom (D) 36%
Newsom will visit Los Angeles next week with former President Bill Clinton at his side.
