One day after submitting paperwork to explore a run for Governor, Attorney General Jerry Brown has been challenged by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom to debate in all 11 media markets in California. “Our state is in need of real reform—we have a broken system that must be fixed,” said Newsom in a statement. “And now that there are two candidates for governor, we owe the Democratic voters of California an opportunity to compare our visions and platforms side-by-side.”
Republican gubernatorial candidates Steve Poizner and Tom Campbell have already held two debates with another scheduled for October 28. A third Republican candidate, former eBay CEO Meg Whitman, entered the race last week.
Newsom suggested that ten of the debates tackle a sole subject with the final one open to all issues. Although Brown has begun first steps for an official run for Governor, his decision is not expected until next year.

There's no way Brown is gonna debate Newsom before he's even officially entered the race.
And Brown won't enter the race until the last month possible, cause he's got nothing to gain by entering the race. Once he's in he'll no longer be above the fray and so his #s could only go down from where they are now.
It was also kind of embarrassing that Newsom sent out this email yesterday:

Subject: Keep up the pressure
On Friday afternoon, 3,221 people signed our petition to stop Meg Whitman from rolling back AB32 – California’s three-year-old landmark climate-change bill to reduce greenhouse gases.
Newsom's only hope of beating Brown is that Bill Clinton somehow gives him a GIANT boost in the polls.

DreamWorks founders Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen are endorsing Jerry Brown's gubernatorial bid and will be co-hosting a fundraiser for him on Nov. 18. A location and donor levels were still being worked out. The trio's endorsement had been expected. Each had already contributed this year to Brown's reelection fund for attorney general, money that can be rolled over into a gubernatorial bid.
In 2007, when they co-hosted a fund-raiser for Barack Obama, it was viewed as a turning point in his efforts to win support in a community once assumed to be overwhelmingly for Hillary Clinton.
Newsom has already held multiple events in Los Angeles, and will host a fund-raising reception on Monday at the Biltmore Hotel with former President Bill Clinton.
