Yesterday Bobby Solomon of Kitsune Noir announced his collaboration with Poketo. The Kitsune Noir + Poketo SPACETIME Collection feature the illustrations of Damien Correll, Cody Hudson, Andy J. Miller, and Mike Perry on Poketo shirts, wallets, and wall decals.
We asked Bobby Solomon to give us more details about his stellar new project.
LAist: How did the collaboration come about?
The collaboration started out with an email from Ted and Angie over at Poketo. They really enjoyed my blog Kitsune Noir and thought it would be fun to work together on a line. So over a wonderful dinner of corned beef sandwiches at Cole's we decided that we clicked and started working on things right away. Now 6 months later here we are with a bunch of great products.
Tell us about the artists who created the images for the project?
I've had previous connections with all of these guys before through Kitsune Noir, so it was great to get an opportunity to work with them creatively. Cody Hudson's art to me borders on the line of fine art and folk art. He has this amazing abstract sense of shape and color. I met Mike Perry long ago, here in Los Angeles, at a parking lot art show and since then we've been sending things to each other. He's a genuinely nice guy and his art always gets me excited. Damien Correll is another one of those artists that I've always enjoyed for his boundless creativity. He has the same kind of weird, space-y style as Mike ,but I think he likes halftones more. Andy Miller was sort of the young buck of the group. He's really starting to get rolling with his illustration career. I love his work so I thought it would be great to put him into the mix.
What inspired the project?
The line up was decided based upon what Poketo had done previously in the past and where they wanted to go in the future. They really liked The Desktop Wallpaper Project I run, where I ask artists and designers to create backgrounds for your computer and iPhone. They figured that we could create a real world version of that with wall decals. So if we got really great artists and designers to participate people could take the decals and make their own art. It was brilliant.
The collection also include wallets and t-shirts. How did each item get chosen?
As for the wallets and t-shirts, Poketo has been successfully selling those for like 6 years now, which was a big part of why I wanted to work with them. I think partnerships really work out even better when you really admire what each other does.
