A Recession Obsession is, 1) a meal so great that it sticks in your mind long after digestion's end, and, 2) plays nice with your sensitive wallet. Is there a better place than Los Angeles to eat a wide variety of amazing food that so happens to be inexpensive? Probably not. We're as lucky as we are well fed. We last obsessed over Greasy Comfortable Nostalgia and Tweetin' Mobile Chinese Tacos. Today, we obsess...

Carnitas, Spanish for "little meats," are my favorite edible incarnation of pork. For me, they’re a dietary staple, best devoured when surrounded by the perfect tortilla. Oh yeah, these tiny meats are typically pig butt.

At best carnitas are juicy, fragrant, and a sensory party. I salivate a river if I see a swine that resembles J-Lo. It just so happens that SoCal-chain Poquito Mas has terrific carnitas, which are available in the best delivery system known to man: homemade tortillas. Plus, they're only a few bucks each.

So yes, sorry sippers of Chain Haterade, a semi-chain, is LAist's latest Recession Obsession.

There are plenty of amazing carnitas to be had about Los Angeles, but knowing I have a choice in reliable Poquito Mas locations helps. (Though you can mostly find me at the Studio City-ish location, where the interior is typically, and comically, smoked out from the grill.)

Your options are the mini taco or the classic taco. The mini taco is your typical taco truck treat, while the classic taco is basically the same thing but larger. They're $2-$3 each.

Their homemade tortillas (a viewing area is provided for those who doubt the location of their creation) are light, perfectly flavored, and -- most importantly -- warm and grilled. Hugging the cooked pork butt, the taco eats like a congealing flavor bomb. And for the price, you can drop a few bombs.

Get it at a Taco truck for fresher and $1-$1.25.

Dude. Carnitas tacos from Thomas (Tumbras, something) at The Grand Central Market in Downtown are amazing. They cost $2.50 and they give you so much meat you could make like three tacos out of it. Sooooo goooooooooooooood............

i also have found the taco truck (that's not on twitter) on logan and sunset blvd in echo park has yummy carnitas too.

Tacos Ariza's is awesome! Be warned: if you venture into burrito land get ready for a ton of onions.

Actually, I meant Tacos Arabes on the other side of Sunset, next to the Walgreens and in front of the tortilleria. Ariza's alright, Arabes' is fantastic.
