LA Dodgers defeat Washington Nationals 14-2. The danger of this series against the Washington Nationals was demonstrated last season. The Dodgers were swept on the road by the Nats. I normally would have been worried about this, but having been in the Dodger clubhouse for a lot of the season I know these guys are focused. And boy did they show it when they batted around the fourth and seventh innings. Rafael Furcal went 4-for-5 driving in four runs and scoring twice, and the scoring parade allowed Jason Repko, Blake DeWitt, Chin-Lung Hu and Juan Castro to play some extended innings. Clayton Kershaw also made an appearance in the eighth and ninth innings giving up a walk while striking out four to put away the Nats for good. Because the Rockies barely escaped a Padres comeback the Dodgers REAL magic number is seven.

NY Yankees defeat LA Angels 6-5. Despite being down 5-0 in the fifth inning, the Angels rallied to come back by the eighth inning. But the Yankees loaded the bases in the ninth inning for Alex Rodriguez who hit a scoring fly ball to give the Yanks the win.

Notable Notes

  • Darren Rovell in his CNBC “Sports Biz” blog talked about a new performance enhancer in the world of football: air conditioned shoulder pads. University of Florida researchers wanted to cut down on heat-related illnesses. The Monday night game between the Miami Dolphins and Indianapolis Colts featured these cool pads. The UCLA Bruins also use these.
  • Khloe Kardashian herself confirmed the rumors about her Sunday nuptuals with Lamar Odom. Brooks at SportsbyBrooks has his take on the Khlomar, and he's none too thrilled. Whatever. I hope it fails because all marriages are a tool of fascism. And death to the fascist insect that preys upon the life of the people!
