With former Governor Pete Wilson as her campaign chairman, former eBay executive and Reublican Meg Whitman formally announced her run for Governor yesterday in Orange County, already gain criticism from an annoyed Governor Schwarzenegger.
At yesterday's event, she vowed to "place a moratorium as governor on implementing Assembly Bill 32, which requires the state to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 25 percent by 2020," according to the Sacramento Bee.
"While Meg Whitman has promoted climate change for years, including a recent cruise to the Arctic with activists, she is now promising to move the state backwards by eliminating California's landmark climate change law," a Schwarzenegger spokesperson said in response.
Whitman also rallied against Sacramento spending, saying she would cut 40,000 jobs, which would help her goal of reducing the state's general fund budget by $15 billion. That's a good card to play since fiscal conservatism is a hot button topic in light of this year's budget drama.
Other Republican candidates include former congressman Tom Campbell and Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner.

So, do we get to bid on her campaign? Or does she have a Buy It Now price with free shipping?
maybe someone will develop a computer program that will let her "snipe" a win.
She is complete idiot. The changes she made at Ebay drove out small independent sellers. She then overpaid for Skype which Ebay then sold at a loss. I would not call her a successful CEO by any stretch of the imagination. Not sure why she thinks she would be a good public official.
Maybe she thinks she can outsource all the state jobs?
No republican who isn't a celebrity has a chance at Governor in this state. Especially not with wingnut views such as this.
But with the likes of Glenn Beck and his extreme views seemingly a powerful force through parts of the country (and state), wingnut may be the way to go to win. Let's hope not, but I look forward to diving into her ideas once they are presented more thoroughly, if ever.
agree... pure luck is what she got with ebay but running Calif, I think not. Maybe I'm a bit pessimism but I think we, Calif, are doomed for at least 10 years.
Umm, I like how she plans to cut 40,000 jobs, yet in that poster right behind her, it says "Create Jobs".
A bit contradictory, no?
Well, to be fair, her "create jobs" slogan is in reference to bringing private industry to California, not creating more government jobs. Below that on the sign, it says "cut spending," which is for the cutting government jobs.
She's saying a lot of the right things, it's just going to come down to how she does plans on doing it.
About her cutting 40,000 jobs number, from what I read the Governor has authority over about 100,000 jobs, about 2/3 of which are part of corrections. So cutting 40,000 seems impossible without A) seriously vast reductions in prison population B) outsourcing government jobs to Vietnam sweat shops as she did with jobs in previous leadership positions in manufacturing or C) allowing Government to collapse all together and hope no one notices.
I'd like to hear some more specifics about where all these job cuts are going to come from.

vote Jerry Brown if want our beloved California restored college was free until Ronald freloader snitch Regan came in
I don't know about Whitman, but she has a better shot at winning than any other Republican.
And lets be honest , if Newsome is the nominee IT WILL come down to gay marriage.
Election politics always comes down to ONE issue.
Newsome will lose unless he can redefine himself, something he hasn't attempted yet.
It will be prop 8 fever if Newsome wins the democratic nomination.
Even if the economy is in the dulldrums, gay marriage seems to be the only thing wingers on both sides are concerned most about.
But if it comes down to economy, Newsome started talking about a soda tax last week, and that's not going to help him either.
Something doesn't add up. Trojan said Zach and all us "ignorant f*cks" are only here to promote cooky, left wing agendas. Why is this here?
It's here because she will probably win, and if not, it will be the most competitive governor's race since...
AND, it's NEWS because, if I'm not mistaken, she will be the first female republican nominee for governor of CA.
it's not like Campbell has a shot, and Steve Poizner will be labeled a Sacramento insider who helped create all of our probelms.
It's whitman's nomination to lose.
The funny thing is that although I consider myself a left-leaning person, I was very much trained to be a fiscal conservative while working my past job at city hall in Santa Clarita. That is, we had a goal to work lean and mean and developed computer applications to save massive amounts of time on bullshit task work. It meant having a pretty heavy IT staff for a smaller sized city, but what they developed were programs that made slow-going bureaucracy go much faster.
@trojan -- woosh!
@zach I think most people are that way, a mix of beliefs, etc. I know only a few people that are staunch supporters of any ideology, regardless of the situation. I was once participating in a similar discussion elsewhere and remember making the point to someone that people's live's aren't binary.
The example that always comes to my mind is that I have to drive 70 miles round trip to work everyday, yet, I still care about the environment. Since I can't afford a hybrid, I do the next best thing: drive a very economical corolla. I also recycle and other things. Point being, your comment is true for most people, that's why when folks start accusing people of promoting some type of agenda -- especially without any real evidence -- it makes me laugh and I know it is pointless to try to reason with them.
So she's running for governor of one of the most environmentally-minded states with record unemployment on a campaign of less environmental protection and less jobs. She's going to fail.
In fact, this election will be great because the Glenn Beck-styled political conservatives have greatly overestimated their size and stay. Lets not forget their grand ol' 9/12 march ended up with around 30,000 protesters, just a bit under the cool 500,000 they expected. And that's with free 24/7 ads on a major cable network. Oh it will be a good day for democracy.
I don't know about glenn beck and 9/12.
What I do know are FACTS.
And Whitman will be the nominee because she's a woman.
Newsome will be the nominee because he's Newsome.
The wingers, by and large, determine the winner of primaries.
How did Prop 8 go?
Newsome is ID as being Prop 8, that's why the pro prop 8 group used him in their ads.
Don't discount Whitman by counting on Beck.
And if you want to talk economy, Newsome has a lot of negatives because he is so PROGRESSIVE on taxes.
ONLY the coastal regions of the state left leaning. The inland is right leaning.
Newsome because he has been an elected official has A LOT more negatives than Whitman to overcome.
I focus on Newsome because there are no other serious candidates from the Democrats side.
Touchy are we, I was talking about Glenn Beck as an aside, I don't see him having much to do with Whitman.
What I do know about Whitman is she supported McCain, who lost California heavily. I also know she's a CEO type, and last I heard it wasn't the best time for CEOs to be in a popularity contest.
And Prop 8 won because of money (a lot of it out of state); with campaign finance laws being different for a candidate than a prop
Also, I was born and raised in the Inland and I'll tell you what, it is not the Inland that elected Reagan. If you look at their backing it's been turning blue everywhere except for Riverside county. Kerry even pulled San Bernardino back in 2004. Who the fuck does that?
Jerry Brown has more money and is pulling far stronger than Newsome, so I do not understand exactly what you mean by "no other serious candidates," to focus on when you're not even talking about the currently front-runner.
Those are the facts.
Brown lost seriousness when Clinton came to bat for Newsome.
I think Brown has support amongst dems, like campbell has amongst republicans.
At the end of the day, you need more than a small loyal group.
Brown is old and he has a lot more baggage than Newsome.
I'd vote for Brown before Newsome only because Brown is so old now that he doesn't F' around. He says what he means, and does what he says- like most old people.
And that trait doesn't have mass appeal.
To me it doesn't matter who wins because we're screwed either way. i just don't want people discounting candidates because of party affiliation.
I want a tough race so who ever wins is held accountable.
Lots of "I think," "I'd vote," and "I want" going on in there. I thought you only cared for the facts? Hah, just teasing.
I'm with you, I think Brown would be good because he knows his shit, doesn't hold back his opinion even if it isn't convenient, yet still respects the political process when it does not go his way. I also GREATLY enjoy his "granpa trying to be hip" swagger.
Although I don't think we're screwed either way, I agree that we should have a good race. I'm not discounting Whitman because of her party, I'm discounting her because she seems to be one of those political known-nothings aside from the fact that Republicans protect corporate interests. At least Schwarzenegger had the Kennedy savvy backing him up.
"How did Prop 8 go?"
Pro 8 won by a thin majority due to lying assed fundy Christain groups.
I Will agree with you that it will likely be a Whitman Newsome race, (unless Jerry Brown throws his hat in the ring), but I doubt Whitman has much of a chance despite the Prop 8 results.
The Governor's race will be about a lot more than just same sex marriage.
I predict a Dem sweep because of the the whole budget mess and the way the Repubs have obstructed any kind of realistic budget for the last several years. I predict it will kill them at the polls this time around. JMHO
If only that were true.
The political machines work campaigns to one or two issues.
Prop 8 was teaching kids about homosexuality in school... remember that!
And that one issue is always the BS issue.
And that's what I am saying. Don't discount Whitman because she's a republican look at the whole picture and what can, and probably will play out.
I think we're screwed as a state either way.
Dems or repubs, they're each loyal to a special interests, just different ones.
our state is corrupt and until that changes we're screwed.
Jusy my own prediction here...
I think after watching the Schwarzenegger trainwreck in action these last 8 years and seeing what "terminating the auto registration fee increase" (which wasn't really an increase), and California voters finding out that they were sold a bill of goods, there will likely be an "anybody but a Republican" sentiment among voters this time around.
If the polls show that there is a huge voter backlash on Repubs this time around, I'll be voting Green or Peace and Freedom parties to try and get their numbers up and give them more validity in the political arena.
I hate when I see high profile female Republicans. Clearly, not because I hate women in politics but because I want to shake them and say "WTF are you doing working on behalf of a party that does not care an iota for you or any issues relating to women at all?" Carly Fiorina, Meg Whitman, Sarah Palin... they're all the same. Then of course, when you get down to brass tacks, the facts come out that THEY themselves don't care about women or women's issues, which boggles the mind.
Meg Whitman is pro choice.
Just because one IDs with a particular party doesn't mean they are behind the entire party platform.
Obama is a Democrat but he's really a communist.
Communist and social democrat aren't the same thing. Unless facist and neo-con are the same thing. Then we're on the same page.
My favorite part was the whittling down of "women's issues" to "abortion." Especially given the fact that msmerymac didn't bring up the subject.
ROFL
"Communist and social democrat aren't the same thing."
Very true. But so far I wouldn't classify anything Obama has done as far left enough to be considered Socilaistic.
Communist? Please Trojie, Joseph McCarthy died 40 some odd years ago, he drank himself to death!
Haha, no no I don't think he's close to socialist. But the idea that a democracy, capitalist or otherwise, should protect it's people and provide basic protections and services, is a social-democratic ideal. A good one at that, and COMPLETELY compatible with capitalism. I don't know how people just don't get that in the US.
Interesting you mention that. I've often felt the same way about many things, including capitalism in general.
Here is a heated example: the folks that like to complain about the language options when calling a business, i.e. Press 1 for English, Press 2 for Spanish, Press 3 for Vietnamese, etc.
The only thing those businesses are doing is adapting to and expanding the market they want to serve. That's a core principle of capitalism.
Yet, people blame illegal immigrants for the behavior. The only people at fault are the businesses. People that want to mandate that no other language be used are basically saying they don't understand capitalism or want to hinder it in that particular case.
Regardless of which it is, it is funny to me.
Agree 100%. My dad (who legally immigrated over 30 years ago, is a US citizen, and speaks impeccable English) recently went car shopping. Of all the dealerships we went to, he ended up buying a car from the one place that had Spanish-speaking floor staff.
My dad didn't need them to speak Spanish to him, but at the end of the day, I'm pretty sure they had at least one more sale because of it.
